While the Commonwealth exists to serve everyone in every member state, the Commonwealth has placed specific emphasis on youth development. I am happy to see so many young faces today. For this reason, my remarks will focus heavily on the youth and their relationship with the Commonwealth. |

Thursday, February 18th 2010 – Kingston, Jamaica: Digicel owner and Chairman, Denis O’Brien, has been named as a goodwill ambassador for the city of Port-au-Prince in Haiti, it was announced today. The honour comes in recognition of Mr. O’Brien’s dedication to helping Haiti recover and rebuild in the aftermath of the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that devastated Port-au-Prince on 12th January and was bestowed on Mr. O’Brien by the mayor of Port-au-Prince, Jean Yves Jason and the deputy mayor, Nadeje Augustin in a meeting in the Haitian capital on Tuesday 9th February. |

ECTEL 10th Anniversary Programme |

Castries, 17th February 2010 - The Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority (ECTEL) will launch a one-year programme in observance of its tenth anniversary, on Thursday 25th February 2010 at the Bay Gardens Beach Resort in Saint Lucia. A leading Caribbean figure has been invited to deliver the feature address. Addresses will also be delivered by the Chairman of the ECTEL Council of Ministers Hon. Joseph Gilbert of Grenada, the Hon. Guy Joseph, Minister responsible for Telecommunications in Saint Lucia and former Prime Minister of Saint Lucia Dr. Kenny D. Anthony. Representatives of regional organisations have been invited to attend this historic event. |

Haitian agriculture minister Gué calls for debt relief |

Delegates from Brazil, Canada, France and the United States attending IFAD Governing Council meeting express support for multilateral relief 18 February 2010, Rome – The Haitian Agriculture Minister, Joanas Gué called for debt relief when he met with senior officials of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and other agencies at the 33rd session of the Funds’ Governing Council. With the G7 calling for debt forgiveness - and indications from several countries, including Brazil, Canada, France and the United States, that they are prepared to support such initiatives - IFAD is moving forward with a robust plan on total debt relief for the country. |
