While the Commonwealth exists to serve everyone in every member state, the Commonwealth has placed specific emphasis on youth development. I am happy to see so many young faces today. For this reason, my remarks will focus heavily on the youth and their relationship with the Commonwealth. |

GRENLEC Joins Its Regional Counterparts in Pledging Support for the Haitian Community |

The Grenada Electricity Services Ltd. (GRENLEC) has begun drumming-up resources to support the relief efforts in Haiti. Members of the GRENLEC Family have been making individual donations and Managing Director, Mr. Vernon Lawrence has indicated that the company will match the sum raised by its staffers. GRENLEC will pool resources with CARILEC members to assist Haiti. In a release issued at the end of last week, “CARILEC, the Association of Caribbean Electric Utilities and their vending partners pledged support to the restoration efforts in Haiti in the aftermath of last Tuesday’s earthquake. Since the disaster, the CARILEC Board of Directors has been in conference calls, deliberating on the best way offer assistance to the devastated island. EDF Martinique, a CARILEC member, has already deployed two people to Haiti as part of a larger French delegation to assist in the restoration of electricity. |

By Ban Ki-moon The disaster in Haiti shows once again something that we, as human beings, have always known: that even amid the worst devastation, there is always hope. I saw that for myself this week in Port au Prince. The UN suffered its single greatest loss in history. Our headquarters in the Haitian capital was a mass of crushed concrete and tangled steel. How could anyone survive, I thought? Yet moments after I departed, with a heavy heart, rescue teams pulled out a survivor – alive, after five days, buried, without food or water. I think of it as a small miracle, a sign of hope. |

GOOD PROGRESS BEING MADE SAYS DIGICEL GROUP CEO |

Stores re-opening; aid, technical supplies and resources arriving in Port au Prince Tuesday, January 19th, 2010 – Kingston, Jamaica: Good progress is being made on restoring the Digicel network with over 80 per cent of cell sites now back on air, enabling customers to make and receive calls, text messages, email and BlackBerry Messenger messages. · As the biggest and best network in Haiti, the Digicel network has remained operational throughout and Digicel now has more cell sites on air than any other provider. Coverage in the provinces continues to be good and in Port au Prince it is improving rapidly with Haitians taking advantage of the free credit of US$5 each (totaling US$10 million) that Digicel has given them. International traffic on Monday showed a 250 per cent increase on normal daily levels. · Digicel is continuing to bring key technical people and equipment in to Haiti to ensure that the network is returned to full strength as soon as possible. In the last two days alone, six planes carrying Digicel network equipment have landed in the capital. |

Start Line Already Strong for 2010 Grenada Sailing Festival |

Some of the best racing and racing/cruising yachts are already booked on the start line for the 2010 Grenada Sailing Festival, presented by Port Louis and Camper & Nicholsons Marinas. The annual National event, run in association with the Grenada Board of Tourism, will run from 29 January to 2 February 2010, and organisers report that they are looking forward to one of the strongest and most competitive fleets since the event began in 1994. In the Racing Class, 2009 Festival winner James Dobbs with his Antiguan based J122 Lost Horizon will take on some stiff competition from such prominent names in Caribbean sailing as Peter Peake with Storm, and Paul Solomon skippering Enzyme, both from Trinidad, plus well-known Festival competitors Steven Lewis and brothers from Barbados in Whistler. Grenada’s home-grown talent will also be in contention with tough local crews sailing for Richard Szyjan in Category 5, David Cullen in Pocket Rocket and Justin and Peter ‘Champie’ Evans in Tanga Langa 3. The event will also be welcoming back British skipper Hugh Pringle and his crack Cowes Week crew, in the very fast Lancelot, and saying hallo for the first time to visitors from Martinique in Sonadio. |
