A pleasant afternoon to you and a special thank you for being part of today’s Commonwealth Celebrations. Welcome.

While the Commonwealth exists to serve everyone in every member state, the Commonwealth has placed specific emphasis on youth development. I am happy to see so many young faces today. For this reason, my remarks will focus heavily on the youth and their relationship with the Commonwealth.

FORMER MINISTER CONCERNED ABOUT AIR JAMAICA’S PULL OUT

February 15th, 2010: Former Minister for Tourism, Hon. Clarice Modeste-Curwen says she empathizes with persons who are being affected by the discontinuation of Air Jamaica’s services which took passengers from New York to Grenada and vice versa.

The member of Parliament for St. Mark says Grenadians at home and in the Diaspora have given tremendous support to Air Jamaica over the years; and that since the service was terminated last week, a large number of persons have been inconvenienced.  The former Minister is also concerned that this situation can also lead to a reduction in the number of visitors to the island which will further affect the Tourism Industry.

A CALL FOR GREATER COLLABORATION IN THE FIGHT AGAINST ILLICIT DRUGS

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Regional policy makers in substance abuse have agreed that the best way to approach the fight against illicit substances was to increase partnerships and greater collaboration in all health services sectors.

They were speaking at a three-day workshop on Behaviour Change Communication for Drug Abuse Prevention Planning, organized jointly by the Caribbean Community Secretariat and the National Council for Drug Abuse (NCDA) Jamaica with funding from the European Union under the 9th EDF Programme.

CARICOM WORKING WITH HAITI FOR THE NATION'S 'RENAISSANCE'

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Haitian Government has identified the town of Léogane and its environs as the preferred location for the health intervention of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

This was the information relayed by Haitian government officials following the CARICOM Mission to Haiti on Saturday 6 February. Over the last few days, the UPP government proved it to any doubters.

They could not care less about transparency and accountability.
 
They treated the Public Accounts Committee with utter contempt and the Minister of Finance bluntly refused to provide the Committee with the financial records necessary to do its work.
