Grenada and Japan hold bilateral meeting
ImageTOKYO, Japan, September 1, 2010 - Foreign Affairs Minister Peter David on Wednesday met with his Japanese counterpart H.E Mr. Katsuya Okada as they discussed a wide range of issues including Climate Change, UN Security Council Reform among others.

The Grenadian Minister, who is in the Japanese capital to attend the Second CARICOM-Japan Ministerial Meeting, took the opportunity to thank the Government of Japan for the assistance they have made available so far, especially in the Fisheries Sector, Human Resource Development through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) programmes and in the area of Climate Change.

Mr. Okada said that Japan was pleased with Grenada’s leadership of Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) particularly at the COP15 and looks forward to their continued leadership at COP16 scheduled for Cancun, Mexico in December.

CARICOM steps up its anti-drug campaign

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)      This year the Caribbean Community Secretariat will partner with the Ministry of Health and Social Transformation, Antigua and Barbuda, to observe the day with a week of activities which focus on the use of Edutainment in primary drug prevention.
 
Edutainment focuses on educating through entertainment and makes use of dramatic and theatre elements such as tableau, thought tracking,  role playing and games.  In addition to the drama strategies, the programme also pulls on aspects of the visual and other performing arts such as singing and dancing in conveying messages geared primarily towards youth audiences.

Upcoming Heads of Government Meeting to put pressing issues into perspective

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     The upcoming Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government in Montego Bay, Jamaica, will seek to put into perspective the current economic climate, the reconstruction of Haiti, the environment, and the strengthening of relations between CARICOM and third states and blocs, among other issues.
 
Briefing the media on Tuesday at a clinic ahead of the Thirty-First Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government Meeting from 4-7July 2010, His Excellency Edwin Carrington, CARICOM Secretary-General said that the Meeting is being held against the background of the global struggle to recover from the two-year old economic and financial crisis.

CDB finance head urges financial institutions to find ways to mitigate losses linked to agriculture

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     Director of Finance and Planning, Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), Dr. Warren Smith on Wednesday told key stakeholders in the agriculture sector, who are gathered at the Jolly Beach Resort, Antigua for the Caribbean Regional Agriculture Symposium, that the entire economy of the Region was likely to be impacted without measures to mitigate risks in the sector.
 
Speaking during the first working session of the Symposium on the topic The State of Agricultural Financing in the Caribbean, Dr. Smith said that the combination of risks associated with adverse weather systems and other challenges, had made agriculture susceptible to high levels of losses transmitted throughout the value chain, to the distribution of trade and the financial institutions.
