Coco Palm's Feolla Chastanet says island is preparing for strong jazz festival RODNEY BAY VILLAGE, St. Lucia (April 15, 2009) - St. Lucian hotelier Feolla Chastanet is hopeful the 2009 Jazz festival, slated from May 2 to 10, will be a big draw for the traveling public with British Grammy-winning stars Amy Winehouse and Estelle recently added to a stellar line-up of musical greats, including Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, James Ingram and Bebe Winans. Chastanet, managing director of the boutique Coco Palm property in Rodney Bay, said the decision to feature Winehouse - who won five Grammys at the 2008 awards and whose absence from the United States entertainment arena has been noticeable - has generated great attention and press coverage for the upcoming festival, especially in the mainstream entertainment media in North America. |

2009 Honoree Receives Accolades during Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Investment Conference
BERMUDA (April 16, 2009) – The life and career achievements of Sir Royston O. Hopkin, KCMG, owner and chairman of Spice Island Beach Resort in Grenada, were celebrated by the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA) with the presentation of the Bill Bissell Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Investment Conference (CHTIC) April 14 - 16 at the Fairmont Southampton in Bermuda. Sir Royston joins an esteemed list of past honorees such as philanthropists and industry veterans including, Peter Dolara, American Airlines; Sol Kerzner, Kerzner Resorts International; Gordon “Butch” Stewart, Sandals Resorts; Chris Blackwell, Island Outpost; and the late Bill Bissell, OBM International, for whom the award was renamed after he was recognized posthumously at last year's CHTIC. |

St. George’s, April 7, 2009 – A leading Caribbean trade unionist is confident the region will survive the current global economic crisis. Jacklyn Jack, President of the Caribbean Congress of Labour (CCL), admits that no one knows how long the crisis will last. However, she believes that whether it takes one, three or five years, the Caribbean will bounce back from the crisis. “What I do know is that we in the Caribbean have survived all kinds of disasters and crisis,” the CCL leader said. “From the crisis with bananas, to hurricane, to recession in the early 80s, we worked together. We stuck together through thick and thin and we all survived.” |

St. George’s, April 8, 2009 – The Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines has lashed out at the behaviour of “helplessness’’ and negativity exhibited by some Caribbean people, especially youth. Dr. Ralph Gonzales wants Caribbean nationals to put aside what he has referred to as the doctrine of “learned helplessness.’’ Too often, many of our people become laid back, believing nothing good can come out of their lives, Dr. Gonsalves said at a meeting in St. George’s of the Grenada Trades’ Union Council. He encouraged everyone, particular young men and women of the Caribbean, to become actively involved in improving their lives. |
