His Excellency, the Governor General, Sir Carlyle Glean; Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Veda Bruno-Victor; Coordinator of Youth; Mr. Kevin Andall; Coordinator of Youth Service & Leadership; Ms. Jacqueline Alexis; Chairperson, Ms. Nisha Mc Intyre; Other staff of the Ministry of Youth Empowerment & Sports; Members of the various youth organizations and clubs; Distinguished guests; visitors from various Commonwealth Nations; principals, teachers, parents, students Cultural Performers; everyone present here today.

A pleasant afternoon to you and a special thank you for being part of today’s Commonwealth Celebrations. Welcome.

While the Commonwealth exists to serve everyone in every member state, the Commonwealth has placed specific emphasis on youth development. I am happy to see so many young faces today. For this reason, my remarks will focus heavily on the youth and their relationship with the Commonwealth.

CARICOM in affirmative action for gender justice

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     Monday, 8 March saw the launch of the CARICOM Advocacy for Gender Justice Programme, a historic initiative for the advocacy of gender equality and justice. The two-year programme will be coordinated by Dr. Rosina Wiltshire who has been named CARICOM Advocate for Gender Justice.
 
The mandate of the CARICOM Advocate for Gender Justice is to influence research, advocacy and policy; to lessen the perpetration of violence against women and promote justice.
 
In her maiden address, Dr. Wiltshire described the programme as critical for greater exposure of Gender-based Violence and the consequent need for legislative and institutional reforms.

CARICOM marks strides towards gender equality

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     The Caribbean Community has made, “significant progress over the last decades in achieving equality between women and men”, says CARICOM Deputy Secretary-General, Amb. Lolita Applewhaite.
 
In an address to mark International Women’s Day on Monday, March 8, at the CARICOM Secretariat, held simultaneously with the Launch of the CARICOM Advocacy for Gender Justice programme, The Dep. Secretary-General said that this had been through legislations, gender mainstreaming, the institutionalisation of gender programmes, and a proliferation of studies and policy analyses which together have fostered a better understanding of the complementary gender roles.

Two Canadian writers make the final of Commonwealth Writers’ Prize

DRUG CONTROL OFFICERS CONCERNED BY ALCOHOL RELATED HOSPITAL ADMISSIONS

St. George’s Grenada, Wednesday March 10th 2010, MOEPRU – Concerns about the number of patients being admitted to the General Hospital for medical problems associated with the consumption of alcohol is prompting the Drug Control Secretariat to conduct research to determine whether the recent increase in prices of alcoholic beverages, due to the imposition of the VAT and the Excise Tax, will reduce consumption of alcohol and the negative consequences associated with such consumption.

Officials have expressed concerned about the increases in the number of patients being admitted for medical problems associated with the consumption of alcohol, including cirrhosis of the liver.
