CARICOM HEIGHTENS ITS RESPONSE TO HAITIAN CRISIS |

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) moved its assistance to its earthquake devastated Member State, Haiti to another level with the deployment of a Tactical Mission to that country on Sunday, 17 January.
On Wednesday, 13 January, less than 24 hours after the earthquake struck on 12 January, Jamaica had deployed medical personnel and security forces to Haiti as a first response. Jamaica is the sub-regional focal point in the area that includes Haiti, The Bahamas and the nearby Associate Members under the system established by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) the regional response mechanism to natural disasters.

“We want to see action,” Youth Commissioners declare
(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) With less than two weeks ahead of the Special Summit of CARICOM Heads of Government on Youth Development – the first of its kind since the Community’s inception – members of the CARICOM Commission on Youth Development say they are looking for all Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community to attend and to commit to “tangible action,” beyond the two day summit, slated for Suriname on 29-30 January. |

The ALP lends its support to the outcry by public |

The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ALP) lends its support to the public outcry by several well-known citizens for the Government to allow households and families to adopt orphaned children of the Haitian earthquake. Because thousands of young children in Haiti have now been left orphaned by the death of their parents, relatives and neighbours, and since so many homes and buildings in Haiti have been destroyed, the number of children requiring a home and loving parents has ballooned following the earthquake. |

CARICOM TO MONITOR GENERAL ELECTIONS IN ST. KITTS AND NEVIS |

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) through its Secretariat has accepted an invitation from the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis to observe the country’s General Elections scheduled for January 25, 2010.
This CARICOM Electoral Observer Mission to St. Kitts and Nevis follows a practice of fielding Missions to Member States during such constitutional processes. The Mission is funded by the Government of Australia, whose contribution is seen as a critical support of good governance, democracy and the rule of law in the Caribbean Community. |

Moment’s silence observed at Contingent Rights Meeting |

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) A meeting on Contingent Rights opened at the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat in Georgetown with the observance of a moment’s silence for those who have died in the powerful earthquake in CARICOM Member State, Haiti.
Ambassador Lolita Applewhaite, CARICOM Deputy Secretary-General who led delegates in Georgetown, and in Kingston, Jamaica via videoconferencing in observing the moment of silence also urged them to continue to keep the people of Haiti in their private thoughts and prayers. |

As Secretary-General I want to welcome you to the headquarters of the CARICOM Secretariat, in particular those of you who may be here for the first time. You are here to begin a series of meetings scheduled for this week which will deal with matters pertaining to Contingent Rights, the outcome of the appraisal of the state of implementation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), the free circulation of goods and the treatment of monopolies in the CSME. |
