Haiti is not Alone
Wednesday, 20 January 2010

By Ban Ki-moon

The disaster in Haiti shows once again something that we, as human beings, have always known: that even amid the worst devastation, there is always hope.

I saw that for myself this week in Port au Prince. The UN suffered its single greatest loss in history. Our headquarters in the Haitian capital was a mass of crushed concrete and tangled steel. How could anyone survive, I thought? Yet moments after I departed, with a heavy heart, rescue teams pulled out a survivor – alive, after five days, buried, without food or water. I think of it as a small miracle, a sign of hope.

The Foundation’s raison d’être, whose original watchword   was “ For the preservation and urban renewal of St. George’s”, was subsequently changed to” For the preservation and renewal of the National Heritage of Grenada” , and having pursued this mandate in one form or another over the past 15 years, felt that it is in a strategic position to make a significant contribution to the ongoing debate as to the pros and cons of the proposed project.

In this regard, the Foundation’s prime concern at this stage is the state of the urbanization of our Capital City, and is therefore in the process of gathering all the relevant facts relating to the City as a whole and the project in particular, before making an in depth analytical presentation to the public.

Restoration of the country’s communication network hampered by bottleneck at airport

Friday, January 15th, 2010: As Digicel continues to work around the clock to restore vital communications in Haiti, the company today expressed grave concern that flights carrying the necessary experts and equipment are not able to land at Haiti’s international airport.
