His Excellency, the Governor General, Sir Carlyle Glean; Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Veda Bruno-Victor; Coordinator of Youth; Mr. Kevin Andall; Coordinator of Youth Service & Leadership; Ms. Jacqueline Alexis; Chairperson, Ms. Nisha Mc Intyre; Other staff of the Ministry of Youth Empowerment & Sports; Members of the various youth organizations and clubs; Distinguished guests; visitors from various Commonwealth Nations; principals, teachers, parents, students Cultural Performers; everyone present here today. A pleasant afternoon to you and a special thank you for being part of today’s Commonwealth Celebrations. Welcome. While the Commonwealth exists to serve everyone in every member state, the Commonwealth has placed specific emphasis on youth development. I am happy to see so many young faces today. For this reason, my remarks will focus heavily on the youth and their relationship with the Commonwealth.

DRUG CONTROL OFFICERS CONCERNED BY ALCOHOL RELATED HOSPITAL ADMISSIONS |

St. George’s Grenada, Wednesday March 10th 2010, MOEPRU – Concerns about the number of patients being admitted to the General Hospital for medical problems associated with the consumption of alcohol is prompting the Drug Control Secretariat to conduct research to determine whether the recent increase in prices of alcoholic beverages, due to the imposition of the VAT and the Excise Tax, will reduce consumption of alcohol and the negative consequences associated with such consumption. Officials have expressed concerned about the increases in the number of patients being admitted for medical problems associated with the consumption of alcohol, including cirrhosis of the liver. |

UNESCO approves funds for Media Training in Grenada |

Secretary General, Grenada National Commission for UNESCO, Mr. Eugene Gittens, has announced the approval of some EC$60,000 for training of the media in Grenada. The UNESCO funds will support two training workshops for media practitioners both geared at raising professional standards of the media on the island. |

Shera mesmerizes the people of Grenada during the visit of the Queen’s Baton 2010 Delhi |

Grenada, March 06, 2010: The people of Grenada were overwhelmed with joy to see the Queen’s Baton 2010 Delhi and Shera, the official mascot of the Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi. A strong contingent of Grenada’s well-known sports personalities became the Batonbearers during the relay. Grenada Governor General, Sir Carlyle Glean and Prime Minister Tillman Thomas greeted the baton in the country.
Grenada’s celebrated boxer, Imrod Bartholomew, Ayesha Noel (National Sportswoman of the Year) , Patricia Sylvester and Timothy Britton (Olympians), Richardson Ettienne, (National Footballer), Gary James (Basketball player), Mr. Conrad Francis (Recipient of the prestigious IAAF Veteran Pin, IAAF Level I coach and National Record Holder) and Lucy Fortune (Track land and field athlete) were some of the famous personalities who became the Batonbearers during the relay. |

Tri-centennial Park in Town of St. George |

St. George’s, March 5, 2009 (GIS) – Grenadians will soon have the use of a new recreational park in the Town of St. George. A sod-turning ceremony was held Friday, March 5, to symbolize the start of work on Tri-centennial Park, located just above Sendall Tunnel leading up to Fort George. Plans for the opening of the park are one of the projects being undertaken to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Town of St. George. When completed, Tri-centennial Park will include a walkway providing easier access to Fort George and other parts of the Town. Tourism Minister Hon. Glynis Roberts said the park will improve Grenada’s tourism product. She said it would also help maintain the Town of St. George, which the Minister described as a “prize.’’ |

DESIGNS SOON TO BE FINALIZED FOR GRENVILLE MARKET PROJECT |

St. George’s, Grenada, March 5th, 2010: Designs are being finalised for the construction of the Grenville Market Square and Development Project. The commencement and eventual completion of the market are expected to result in major job-creation and a construction boost. Project Coordinator Patrick Martin said the project will consist of four important components: reconstruction of the market, construction of an abattoir at Mirabeau, a bus terminal at Moonshadow Park and a drainage system for the Town of Grenville. |

Min. Hood Promises 24-Hour Response to Promoters |

St. George’s, March 5, 2010 (GIS) – Concert promoters applying for work permits to bring artistes to perform in Grenada have been promised a 24-hour response to their application. The guarantee was given Thursday by Labour Minister, Hon. Karl Hood, when he met with about 20 promoters at the Ministerial Complex in St. George’s. The meeting came on the heels of the recent decision of the Labour Ministry to deny a work permit to Jamaican artiste, Mr. Vegas. Hon. Hood said his ministry was interested in having a smooth and amicable relationship with promoters. He welcomed suggestions they offered during Thursday’s meeting. |
