CARICOM to Review Report on the Needs of Consumer Organisations

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     As the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) prepares to celebrate World Consumers’ Day on 15 March 2010, the Fourth Meeting of Consumers’ Affairs Officials will review a report on the needs of Caribbean Community (CARICOM) consumer organizations.
 
Consumers remain a critical stakeholder group which is expected to benefit from the implementation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME). In this regard the CARICOM Secretariat contracted consultant Mr. John Lawrence to examine Member States’ efforts and capacity to protect the interest of consumers, in light of their obligations under the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas.

WATER HIGH ON CARICOM AGENDA

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)  With several Member States of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) reeling from the effects of drought, the water situation in the Region will come under sharp focus at the 21st Intersessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government which opens Thursday morning.
 
The Heads of Government Meeting at Fort Young Hotel in Roseau, Dominica, will discuss water resources within the Community during the two-day Summit under the broader head of `Critical issues in the development of the Community’.

More women choosing to work, but gender equality remains a long way
off


GENEVA (ILO News) -
Despite signs of progress in gender equality over the past 15 years, there is still a significant gap between women and men in terms of job opportunities and quality of employment, according to a new report by the International Labour Office (ILO).

The report, entitled "Women in labour markets: Measuring progress and identifying challenges", says that more than a decade after the 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing adopted an ambitious global platform for action on gender equality and women's empowerment, gender biases remain deeply embedded in society and the labour market.

STEPPING UP TO TAKE COMMAND: BRITISH HIGH COMMISSION SPONSORS REGIONAL TRAINING IN ST LUCIA FOR PRIS

The British High Commission to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean is sponsoring a regional training and development programme for Superintendents designate and members of senior prison management from Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.  The two week course kicked off on Wednesday 24 February at the Auberge Seraphine Hotel, St Lucia with an opening ceremony.  Featured speakers were the Minister of Home Affairs and National Security, the Honourable Guy Mayers, Director of Corrections at Bordelais Correctional Facility, Mr Hilary Herman and Resident British Commissioner, Mr Karl Burrows.

Chair, first I wish to express my gratitude to you and the distinguished Members of the Permanent Council for giving me this opportunity to reflect on the challenges and accomplishments of the last five years and share with you my vision for this institution.

Although a national of the Republic of Suriname, I am privileged to once again address you as the candidate of the Caribbean Community.  CARICOM Heads of Government unanimously endorsed my nomination in July 2009. Other member states of the OAS have also pledged their fullest support for my nomination, and, with your permission, I take this opportunity to express my gratitude for the overwhelming support and confidence, received so far.
