Prime Minister Baldwin to set tone for New York Conference on the Caribbean |

As preparations are heightened prior to the launching of the New York Conference on the Caribbean later this week, a number of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have confirmed their attendance at the two-day event in Brooklyn, New York, USA.
The Conference will be launched on 19 June 2008, at the Brooklyn Borough Hall by the Hon. Baldwin Spencer, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda. Most of the other Conference activities, including an Education Symposium and sessions on Trade and Investment, will be held at the Marriott New York at the Brooklyn Bridge.

AIDS still prevalent in Caribbean despite progress |

Progress has been made in efforts to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean, notably the reduction in mother-to child transmission in all countries and the significant increase in persons accessing anti-retroviral treatment. Notwithstanding, AIDS remain the leading cause of death among 25-44 year; and prevalence is high among the most vulnerable populations, says a UNAIDS progress report on the Caribbean. |

Two years ago, when I had the honor of addressing this august body for the second time, I committed the Caribbean to achieving universal access to HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support services by the year 2010. It was bold pronouncement on the part of the Caribbean considering the twin problems of a region with the second highest prevalence of HIV infection in the world and limited technical and financial resources that the region had to surmount in order to achieve this milestone. |
