St. George’s, April 8, 2009 – The Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines has lashed out at the behaviour of “helplessness’’ and negativity exhibited by some Caribbean people, especially youth.

Dr. Ralph Gonzales wants Caribbean nationals to put aside what he has referred to as the doctrine of “learned helplessness.’’

Too often, many of our people become laid back, believing nothing good can come out of their lives, Dr. Gonsalves said at a meeting in St. George’s of the Grenada Trades’ Union Council.

He encouraged everyone, particular young men and women of the Caribbean, to become actively involved in improving their lives.

“We must never join those who embrace learned helplessness,’’ Dr. Gonsalves said. “They present the learned helplessness in the most militant language. Their principal doctrine is that ‘it can’t be done,’ and the way things are it’s the natural order.’’

The Vincentian leader, however, dismissed the notion of “natural order’’ and impossibilities.

“On this earth nothing is impossible,” he said.
