SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (May 6, 2009) – Margaret Jarzobski, Virgin Holidays Resort Service Supervisor Miami, was thrilled to attend the graduation of the Virgin Holidays CHTA Education Foundation (CHTAEF) scholars 2005 & 2006, Kelly Ann Williams Dominica & Sonia Beharry, Trinidad as they graduated with their B Sc Hospitality & Tourism Management degrees at a large ceremony at FIU.
Margaret commented “This is a proud moment for Virgin Holidays as we share in the success and excitement of graduation with two of our Caribbean scholars. Virgin Holidays is a committed partner of the CHTA Education Foundation and is excited to see Kelly Ann and Sonia head back to the Caribbean tourism sector and give of their knowledge, modern skills and enthusiasm to shape the future of Caribbean tourism development”.
Tom Pas, Chairman CHTAEF was on hand to give applause, wide smiles and congratulated the two young women on their stellar achievements saying “You are role-models for young Caribbean people heading into tourism; you have a solid academic foundation and have enjoyed good experience in multi-national chain properties during your degree program – head back to the Caribbean and shine brightly!”.
Meanwhile, Helen Richmond, Virgin Holidays Destination Manager Barbados was celebrating the start of Virgin Scholars attending the prestigious regional University of the West Indies. Helen brought greetings from Amanda Wills, Managing Director Virgin Holidays who commented “We are particularly pleased that the 2009 Virgin Holidays scholars will be attending The University of The West Indies (UWI). This is a first and part of our umbrella objective to keep such projects and their relevance to the Caribbean specifically at the forefront of all our activity. UWI has an excellent reputation worldwide and we are pleased to note, on our encouragement, that UWI has recently introduced sustainability modules into its tourism courses. This, we feel, it vital to the long term picture, a picture we are passionate about and committed to”.
Hamish Watson, Trustee CHTAEF expressed delight at the regional institution being supported through the Education Foundation by such a strong global tourism player as Virgin Holidays and commented “CHTAEF has for many years supported UWI students through general scholarships and we are delighted named scholars are attending UWI from this year; we hope many more corporate partners will support CHTAEF scholars at UWI. In this time of economic hardship many young professionals may find UWI an affordable alternative to travelling overseas yet still an opportunity to gain a first-rate degree”.
Dr. Sherma Roberts, Coordinator of Tourism & Hospitality programs brought greetings from Dr. Justin Robinson, Head of Management Studies incorporating the Tourism & Hospitality degree programs who commented “UWI is honoured to be recognized for its leadership within regional tourism education & development. We believe industry-experience is no longer enough, tourism requires a combination of trained minds and practical experience; our programs at UWI offer a broad scope, campus in Barbados & the Bahamas and strong sustainable tourism modules. Our Masters programs at the Centre for Resource Management & Environmental Studies offer world-renowned responsible tourism post-graduate programs”.
