PRIME MINISTER THE HON. TILLMAN THOMAS St. George’s, June 3, 2009, (GIS)- Prime Minster Honourable Tillman Thomas has urged Grenadians to begin early preparedness for the 2009 Atlantic hurricane season. In a national radio and television address to mark the official start of the hurricane season, the Prime Minister said it is important to begin preparing now and not wait until a disaster strike. Prime Minister Thomas, who is also Minister of National Security, reminded Grenadians that it is critical to take early precautionary measures. “We need to prepare to mitigate the impact of any hazards we may experience this season. We need to identify hazards associated with hurricane and prepare for them,” he said. “We must therefore develop a family disaster plan and make sure all members of the family are familiar with the plan.” The Prime Minister has also asked for citizens' cooperation with the National Disaster Management Authority (NaDMA), which is embarking on revitalizing district and community groups around the country. “These groups, if properly organised, will enable us to better serve our communities in case a hurricane strike,” the Prime Minister emphasized. He advised nationals that whenever a storm-watch or hurricane warning is issued, they should seek information from NaDMA. “Remember to pay attention to information from NaDMA, which is the official source for disaster related information during the season,” he said. "Once there is a threat, they would provide all the relevant information through the media. In a time of crisis, you need information that is up to date, relevant and accurate.” The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, 2009. The Atlantic basin seasonal hurricane forecast predicts that the region will experience 12 named storms this year. Six are expected to become hurricanes, with two of the six predicted to become intense hurricanes.
