St. George’s, (June 3rd, 2009) - Zublin Grenada has made the first presentation on a 300 million dollar project called the St. George’s Renaissance, aimed at renewing and revitalizing the Town of St. George’s. The presentation was made to members of the media, and a group of stakeholders. The meeting was organized by Minister of Tourism Hon. Peter David and included Minister of Works Joseph Gilbert, Minister of Agriculture Hon. Dennis Lett and Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance Hon. Michael Church. Government has been in discussion with a wide range of interested groups, including Zublin, about how best to improve the social and economic conditions existing in the Town. This project has been conceptualized by Zublin, and Government has asked Zublin to seek views from a wide cross section of persons on the proposed project.
The project which is still in its proposal stages will include the creation of a second cruise ship jetty, and the building of a ring road from the Carenage to Melville Street. The project aims to fuel economic growth while preserving and protecting important historic buildings, landmarks and symbols. As part of this, the Carenage infrastructure and atmosphere will be improved, the market square area will be restored to a place of beauty, and a pedestrian only access will be created through the Sendall Tunnel.
Zublin’s CEO Dick Van Dijk says the presentation was a first of many to come and that the discussions which took place were extremely useful. “We found the comments very constructive and generally supportive of the project. With the guidance of Government we will continue this dialogue which will no doubt help in making the project a success,” Mr. Van Dijk remarked.
The project is expected to be financed through a public private sector project between Government and Zublin. Under this partnership Zublin is proposing that a casino license be issued and permission be granted by Government to allow for the reclamation of land to create a commercial space and to restore some of the islands damaged beaches.
The Zublin CEO says that the success of the project will also be dependent on the ability to start as soon as possible. Mr. Van Dijk noted that, “We are currently facing a global economic crisis which has made financing very difficult to obtain. Zublin has managed to secure the private component of the financing and are now working with Government to see how best we can partner together on this project. I hope we can move forward in a timely manner because some of the opportunities we have now may not exist if we are delayed too long.”
