HON. MICHEAL DENIS LETT The Grenada government is determined to see the country reestablished as a major player in the production and sale of high quality nutmeg and by-products on the international market. This assurance was given by Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Hon. Michael Denis Lett, speaking at the presentation of the Development Strategy for Nutmeg and Mace at Belmont Estate on May 22. Minister Lett said that after studying the implementation plan, it is clear that the sector has great potential, not only for increased exp ort earnings but for significantly increasing employment in the rural economy. Mr. Lett said the strategy will be presented to development partners and implementing agencies , which will determine the best approach for providing the required support for the industry. He expressed government’s commitment to work with all the stakeholders to implement the strategy, which w he says will ensure the sustainability of the sector.
The strategy is the result of a series of meetings, consultations and discussions by the National Coordinating Committee, set up in September 2008 and headed by Chief Analytical Chemist in the Ministry of Agriculture Dr. Guido Marcelle. The committee also included several prominent farmers and other stakeholders in the nutmeg sector.
Dr. Marcelle described the presentation of the strategy as “taking a quantum leap in the way the country as a whole approaches the nutmeg industry.”
Said the success of the strategy will be determined by the extent to which all stakeholders in the industry were involved adding that “the process must continue to be one of total involvement.
Chairman of the GCNA Board of Directors, Denis Felix, said he was confident that the association will receive the “support from the highest level” as it continues to rebuild and resuscitate the industry.
Felix called for collective partnership with the Government of Grenada and
Stakeholders to restore the industry to its former prominence and bring greater benefits to farmers.
