Monday 08th June, 2009:   St. George’s University was proud to be one of the corporate sponsors of the Grenada Chamber of Industry and Commerce’s 2008/2009 Junior Achievement programme. This year’s program which included over three hundred and fifty fourth-form students from nineteen of the nation’s secondary schools, culminated in a graduation ceremony at the Charter Hall, St. George’s University on Thursday May 28, 2009.

Chairperson of the Junior Achievement Programme, Patricia Maher, commented that the 2008/2009 JA programme was “bigger and better” than ever due to the fact that there was increased participation from the schools and increased financial support from corporate sponsors.  Ms Maher also attributed the tremendous growth of the programme to the efforts put in by the volunteers and teachers and the quality of the work done by the students.  This, she said, made the JA 2008 /2009 even better than previous years and resulted in a very impressive Trade Fair.”

The highlight of the graduation was its guest speaker, Destra Garcia, “bigger and better” soca artiste from Trinidad and Tobago. Greeted by a roar of applause and cheers from the audience who had sat in eager anticipation of her presentation, youthful and down-to-earth Destra congratulated the graduates on their success. “I am very proud of you,” she told them. “This is just the beginning.” Ms. Garcia encouraged the graduates to get a great education, push themselves to their full potential and become role models for those coming after them. “Failure is only a stepping stone to success,” she added.

Capturing the JA title was St. Joseph’s Convent St. Andrew’s with their company “Bold and Roving Promotions”, while Westmorland Secondary came in second with their company “The W” and Westerhall Secondary third with “Westerhall Star Service Providers”. Other awards included Certificates of Scholarship for the programme’s sponsors, Certificates of Participation for teachers and consultants and awards for the top three entrepreneurs in various categories including “Most Outstanding Business Plan”, “Best Public Relations” and, from the JA Trade Fair, “Most Outstanding” and “Best Decorated” booths.
