RBTT YOUNG LEADERS OF ANGLICAN HIGH SCHOOL SHOW OFF THEIR AWARDS
The comprehensive and widely researched project produced by the Young Leaders of Anglican High School (AHS) earned them first place and the coveted Award of Distinction at the recent 2009 RBTT Young Leaders 2009 Award Ceremony.

AHS was among 15 other secondary schools throughout Grenada that participated in this year’s Young Leaders programme, which focused on the theme: “The Green Revolution…. Global Challenge, Regional Responsibility, National Focus”.

The theme challenged the Young Leaders to take steps to reduce their ‘carbon footprint’. They were also encouraged to take the ‘Green Revolution’ home to the hearts and minds of their families and communities through innovative and resourceful projects based on solid research. Students undertook activities such as community walks, symposiums and the erection of billboards to address this theme, with recycling recurring as the main concept to convey the ‘go green’ message.

The overall results were:
•    Anglican High School – Award of Distinction/1st place
•    St. Joseph’s Convent High School – Award of Excellence/ 2nd place
•    St. David’s Catholic Secondary – Award of Merit/ 3rd place
•    St. Mark’s Secondary School – Judges’ Award

Jem Andrews of AHS received the Most Outstanding Leader award. Young Leaders teachers of the three winning schools each received a cheque in the amount of $2000, $1,500 and $1,000 for first, second and third place, respectively.

The Award ceremony, held at the Grenada National Stadium on May 29, attracted more than 500 students and teachers and was also attended by Sir Carlyle Glean, Governor General; The Honorable Tillman Thomas, Prime Minister and Minister for Legal Affairs; and several other government officials.

“RBTT has always been moved by a deep sense of social and community responsibility,” said RBTT Grenada Country Head – Champa Rampersad-Barnes. “In the Young Leaders programme, we saw the opportunity to fulfill this responsibility, while helping young people develop leadership skills, care for their community and the environment, and implement sustainable programmes that have meaningful and wide-ranging impact. This year’s theme encouraged Young Leaders to take back our planet and to realise that every ‘green’ action—no matter how small—matters.”
