PROUD FATHER MR DOUGLAS NOEL (LEFT) LOOKS ON AS YOUNG CALUM NOEL (CENTRE) IS CONGRATULATED BY MR. PHIL SAYE (RIGHT). Dive Grenada Scuba Centre made history this weekend as one of their young divers became the youngest ever Grenadian to gain his PADI Advanced Diver Certification. At just 12 years of age Calum Noel, a pupil at PBC, has shown an immense maturity and aptitude for diving in achieving this internationally recognized certification. Having first learnt to dive just a year earlier, his infectious enthusiasm for the sport was enough to convince his father and now dive buddy Dr. Douglas Noel to join him as he worked towards this advanced diving qualification.
Over the course of the last few months the pair devoted several weekends to furthering their scuba diving training. Under the careful guidance of Mr. Phil Saye, Master Scuba Diver Trainer at Dive Grenada, they have expanded their diving skills and knowledge with a series of adventurous dives. These dives included navigation training, a thrilling opportunity to dive in a current ”a bit like flying”, the exploration of a shipwreck, and learning to find and identify some of Grenada’s fantastic marine life out on the coral reefs. Their training culminated in an advanced deep dive to one of Grenada’s popular ship wreck sites.
Mr. Phil Saye is committed to encouraging Grenada’s youngsters to get out and enjoy the ocean and thrilled with Calum’s achievement “we have some fantastic diving and we are working hard to get the people who live here in Grenada out and enjoying the amazing coral reefs and marine life on our doorstep”. It would seem that it’s never too young to get started. Dive Grenada, based at the Flamboyant Hotel Morne Rouge, offers scuba diving training to youngsters from just 8 years of age. As Calum and Douglas have discovered it’s a fun and safe family activity.
