HON. GLYNIS ROBERTS
Wednesday February 03rd 2010, St. George’s:
Tourism Minister Hon. Glynis Roberts has given assurance that the Grenada Airlift Committee is fervently working to fill the void created by Air Jamaica’s decision to terminate some routes, including the direct New York-to-Grenada schedule.

Other destinations that will be affected by the Air Jamaica decision, which takes effect from March 9, are Curacao, Nassau and Havana.

Minister Roberts says while the Airlift Committee is working to have other service providers fill the Air Jamaica void, there are still existing options for passengers travelling to Grenada.

“We have American Airlines out of Miami, American Eagle operating out of Puerto Rico, and we also have the option of using Caribbean Airways via Barbados or Trinidad,’’ she said.

The Minister said her ministry and all its tourism partners are involved in finding a quick solution to the airlift issue, which would be positively impacted with the resumption of Delta flights into Grenada this summer.
“We are working with all parties to see how best we can cover that period – between March and July – when Delta airlines is expected to resume direct flights into Grenada,’’ Mrs. Roberts said.

Government remains committed to creating access into the country and will continue to support the Grenada Airlift Committee in their attempts to not only fill the void, but also to in increase the country’s airlift capacity, the Minister added.

She noted that efforts by the Airlift Committee resulted in British Airways including Grenada on its 2010 summer list. “We are also working with Virgin Atlantic for an additional flight into the country,’’ Minister Roberts said.
