PRIME MINISTER HON. TILLMAN THOMAS
ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, THURSDAY, JULY 8TH 2010 _
Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas has welcomed the support of the World Bank for Grenada and the Alliance of Small Island States, in the struggle against global warming and climate change.

“I am pleased that one of the world’s leading financial institutions has understood the nature of our concerns and the severity of our situation if things continue as they are. There is no doubt that small island developing states are feeling the immediate impact of rising temperatures,” said Prime Minister on Thursday.

He was responding to a letter from the World Bank’s President, Robert Zoellick, which outlined the bank’s position on the case made by AOSIS for assistance to fight climate change and which praised Grenada’s leadership of the Alliance.

The letter from the World Bank President said “I have been very impressed by the significant impact that the AOSIS, under Grenada’s leadership, has had in focusing world attention on the special circumstances confronting small states as a result of climate change.”

Mr. Zoellick said the World Bank will be “happy to advocate” on behalf of AOSIS and to encourage its developmental partners to finance, “both the AOSIS and Grenada’s chairmanship responsibilities.”

In his Letter to the Prime Minister, Mr. Zoellick said he is committed to help enhance the ability of AOSIS to develop transformational adaptation and low carbon growth programmes that will be eligible for support through climate change finance mechanisms.

He said the Bank has already lobbied to Grenada’s inclusion in the Pilot Programme for Climate Resilience (PPCR), which will help the island to identify and prioritize investments and other supportive activities to strengthen climate resilience.

The World Bank President described Grenada’s role at last December’s Copenhagen Summit as “constructive.”
