A DYNAMIC COMBINATION Music is said to have
the power to tame a
wild beast. Whether or
not this was meant literally
the power of
music has never been
argued with.
Many a stigmatized, victimized
or disadvantaged
person has used music to
fight back and this is
exactly what a group of
talented and determined
St. Andrew’s men and
woman is doing.
If this ambitious group of
people have their way, the
Reggae Family will very
soon be making waves on
the local music scene and
possibly further a-field.
What exactly is the reggae
Family about in
terms of entertainment?
Well they have some
seven live shows planned
but the biggest thing for
them is a team up with
Jamaican Reggae superstar
Warrior King.
This reggae show will
take place at Bains Hall
in Grenville on March 17
and presents a great
opportunity for the members
of Reggae Family to
showcase their talent to a
large local audience.
The choice of Warrior
King as the artiste to feature
in this show is not a
random. The group is
inspired by the positive
lyrics of this greatly
admired.
Warrior King will be
entertaining the Grenadian
audience with his
usual dynamic and inspiring
performance.
More than this however,
he will be assisting the
group by teaching them
more about the art of Reggae
music and helping
them to understand the
art form and how they
can improve and excel at
it.
The ultimate dream of the
group of entertainers is to
travel and spread their
message through the
music, to all the earth. To
ready themselves for this
they are doing a lot of
reading-magazines,
books, whatever- listening
to news and staying in
touch with what is happening
in the world of
music. They also plan to
showcase their talent for
Cricket World Cup.
Hailing mainly from the
Moon Shadow area of
Grenville in St. Andrew’s,
members of the Reggae
Family are determined to
show the world that
sometimes when all
seems lost there is a way
out and they are choosing
music as there way out.
Unfortunately society has
a way of branding and
labeling people based on
where they come from or
where they live. Many
times these brandings are
not accurate at all but
still people use them to
discriminate against the
persons and in some cases
compromise their personal
progress and development.
These St. Andrew’s
singers and musicians are
not going to let stigmatization
and unfair discrimination
stop their growth,
stifle their talent or prevent
them from reaching
out to people through
their chosen medium,
music.
The men insist that
although Moon Shadow
Park has been labeled as
an undesirable part of
town it is really a hangout
for guys in the parish who
have a love for music.
One of the objectives of
the group is to get members
involved in positive
activities such as agriculture,
painting of road
signs, cleaning of the
beach, support for the
elderly and other pursuits
that will be beneficial to
the society in general.
Legal help and advice will
also be sought for members
to help keep them
within the framework of
the law and also to help
them be aware of their
rights.
The heartfelt sentiment is
that there seems to be no
hope for a lot of people in
Grenada who then
become frustrated and
dabble in drugs and
crime. The Reggae Family
will attempt to change
this mindset. It gives the
young men in the village
an opportunity to provide
for themselves.
In their opinion Reggae
brings back love and will
help combat the effects of
social breakdown caused
by political and religious
differences and the
demise of the social and
educational structures.
The Reggae Family then
is a group of individuals
who have decided to start
a movement to showcase
their talent. These talented
individuals have been
organized into a group
and have started performing,
thus the advent of
Studio One where members
of the group can go
and perform.
The group is made up of
ordinary people like farmers,
vendors, fishermen,
musicians, other regular
people. It is all about promoting
togetherness in
the community by teaching
positive things to the
youth.
Besides using the music
to gain recognition on the
international market
these brothers and sister
will use it to help build
togetherness and improve
relationships with fellow
members of the community.
They feel that people who
live in or frequent Moon
Shadow Park do not get
the level of respect that
they deserve and are
unfairly stigmatized.
They will use their music
to change the mindset of
members of the society
and their perception of
the people involved in the
group.
The Reggae Family is
quite confident that the
group will be a great success.
They have already
made a positive impact in
the area by giving hope to
the hopeless youth in the
community of Moon Shadow.
Despite their different
religious and social backgrounds,
The Reggae
Family is
determined to work
together as a family for a
common purpose, towards
self sufficiency
and to be welcomed and
recognized as part of the
society. Also to provide
support for
members who are experiencing
difficulties.
