Thursday 12th July 2007- St. George’s: UNESCO has partnered with the Ministry of Education in a project entitled Science Laboratory Training in Lab Safety for Science Teachers.

The project which commenced on Monday 9th July, 2007 is currently being implemented at the Teacher Training College of the T. A. Marryshow Community College.

This project seeks to educate laboratory users, including teachers and industrial technicians on current safety procedures for storing, using and disposing of chemicals.

A total of 35 persons who work in school and industrial settings will be trained.

Participants will get hands on training in appropriate procedures for storing, handling, and disposing of chemicals and will be involved in using international published Material Safety Data Sheets.

Training will focus on practical use of safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, goggles, fume hoods, safety symbols and their interpretation.

Training will make use of a variety of methods including field trips, project and case base approach among others. Participants will get the opportunity to observe the negative impact of inappropriate disposal on the environment and devise measures to avoid this situation.

Further information on this initiative can be obtained from the UNESCO office at the Ministry of Education.
