As a major part of an on-going commitment to youth empowerment through education, Republic Bank recently awarded University of the West Indies (UWI) student, Marika Hillaire, a two-year Republic Bank Scholarship valued at EC $40,000.   

Ms. Hillarie began her undergraduate work through the Distance Education Programme of the UWI School of Continuing Studies, Grenada Centre. She will now transfer to the Cave Hill Campus to complete the final two (2) years of her Economics (Special) Degree.  

In accepting the scholarship, Ms. Hillaire expressed a “profound gratitude for the endowment bestowed upon her” and commended the bank on undertaking a “positive and generous initiative to invest in Grenada’s most essential asset – human resource, by way of education.”  

Launched in 1994, the scholarship assists attending UWI students under the Bank’s corporate social responsibility initiative, the Power To Make A Difference Programme.

The Republic Bank Scholarships are available to Grenadian nationals pursuing or intending to pursue a first degree at any campus of the University of the West Indies.  The areas of study for the Republic Bank Scholarship are: Business Management/Management Studies, Information Technology, Economics, Marketing, Finance, Accounting and Human Resource Management.  These areas of study are subject to review at the discretion of the Bank.

In selecting candidates for the scholarship, careful consideration is given to financial need, the area of study and academic record.  The selection process involves the preparation by the UWI Centre for Continuing Studies of a shortlist from the applicants. A committee comprising the Resident Tutor and Head of the UWI Centre and two representatives of the Bank makes the final selection.

The next Republic Bank Scholarship will be awarded in August 2008 and application forms are available from any Republic Branch, UWI campus or on-line at www.republicgrenada.com.  

Deadline for the receipt of applications is June 30th.
