Caribbean governments need to invest significant amounts of resources into the herbal sector. This is the view of Denis Noel one of Grenada's most successful manufactureres of herbal products.
Noel told an attentive audience
who gathered at the Grenada
Board of Tourism Conference Room
to witness the launching of his
newest product Nut- Med Cream
that research will bring to light the
number of herbs that are laying
within the flora of this region that
can be used for treating and curing
major ailments such as Cholesterol;
Kidney problems, Asthma
and several cancers.
“I want to make this point because
it is quite relevant to us here in
Grenada and in the Region as a
whole. The recent policy statement
made on combating HIV/AIDS in
Grenada highlights stigma, discrimination
and the use of condoms
but fails to take onboard research
to discover the possibility of the
use of herbal medicines there is a
major strategy of combating HIV/
AIDS, Take Noni for instance a
product which testimonials show
helps develop the immune system
and regulate pressure and sugars.
It is available worldwide, especially
in the Pacific Islands where the
natives use it as a Herbal supplement.
Noni Juice is a life saver and
should be integrated into any programme
aimed at combating that
dreadful disease.

Noel who is passionately interested
in examining the possibilities for
the herbal sector in Grenada,
remarked, “Our forefathers had
given us herbal remedies that can
cure many health problems but our
failures to undertake research into
these products makes it difficult
for medical practitioners to prescribe
them in the absence of clinical
trials being first conducted to
determine efficacy and dosage.”
Today even at the Heads of Government
level there are concerns
about the future of Agriculture,
”but if we do the research herbs we
will realize that these plants can
help restore our agriculture and
bring a better standard of health
care to all our peoples in the
region,” explained Noel. Not withstanding
the advances made in
Medical Science unfortunately it is
not accessible nor affordable to
80% of the world’s population.
So while there is worry about the
future of agriculture, Noel believes
that the Caribbean region with the
bio-diversity that exists among our
flora, we can generate foreign
exchange that is even greater than
what traditional agriculture export
brought to the region.
He said,” we will not have to worry
as to where our agriculture is going
because we are sitting on a gold
mine and we don’t even realize it.”
“Pain is one thing that is common
to all people the world over”, says
Denis Noel; a retired Chief Technical
Officer in the Ministry Of Agriculture
who began to produce Nut-
Med spray in 2000 by adding science
to a remedy of old. In six short
years he has seen his product span
the globe bringing relief to thousands
of people the world over and
gaining FDA Registration for sale
(OTC) in the United States of
America.
As a developing state with limited
technology Grenada and the Lesser
Developed Countries (LDC’s), have
been producing raw materials
which were exported and reimported
as finished products.
Noel has been very keen on ensuring
that what ever is produced in
the land as raw material can be put
into the final stage where it can be
used by people as a process product
thereby adding value to our agriculture.
