COLIN DOWE, DEAN OF ENROLLMENT PLANNING AT SGU
The St. George’s University has joined the Grenada Chamber of Industry and Commerce (GCIC) as a major sponsor for the 2007 – 2008 Junior Achievement program.
Assistant Dean of Enrolment Planning, Colin Dowe, says that this partnership is a natural marriage because it reinforces the founding principles of the University. Dowe highlighted that the University is itself a beacon of vision and bold entrepreneurial spirit. Founded in 1977 and celebrating its pearl anniversary this year, SGU was the first of its kind as Chancellor, Dr. Charles Modica invested in the dream of providing quality medical education in a nurturing environment. St. George’s has grown to become an international center of academic excellence.
During the launch of the JA program, the University’s administrator explained that the synergy between the Chamber’s efforts and the SGU is evident in the structure of the programs offered at True Blue. Just as the medical and veterinary students get hands-on exposure through clinical training, the business students are required to have a practicum experience in order to earn their degree. So too the JA program brings a practical aspect to what is taught in the classroom.
The University has committed to providing mentorship to the twenty one (21) companies formed in the participating secondary schools through the involvement of its undergraduate students. As these students work with their alma maters and/or schools in their community, they will be fulfilling part of the community service mandate of the School of Arts and Sciences. The Faculty will also be involved by serving as consultants to these young companies in a variety of disciplines. Entrepreneurship is one mode of working toward poverty alleviation and St. George’s University is pleased to be able to reach even deeper among the cadre of young Grenadians and assist in honing this very important skill.
