Government launches Home Garden Programme PDF Print E-mail

Enhancing Food Security in an environment of soaring food prices is the theme behind a new initiative of the Government of Grenada in response to the rising food prices. The Government of Grenada has embarked on a series of measures to lessen the impact, especially on the more vulnerable groups in society. These measures include the removal of import duties on a number of food items, implementation of the Food Basket and Milk Distribution Programme, Transportation Relief Programme, the newly launched Farm Debushing programme and now The Home Garden Programme which specifically targets both rural and urban poor.
 
The programme was launch on Tuesday May 27, 2008 at the Grenville Agricultural station. The aim of the programme is to enhance the status of our national Food Security through an increase in local food production.
 
At a brief ceremony to make the launch of the project Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture Veda Bruno Victor, express her satisfaction to the overwhelming response and interest received from the farming community and other persons especially the single mothers and house wives. The Permanent Secretary encouraged those present to eat what we grow and grow what we eat.
 
Sen. the Hon. Carl Caton who was also present at the launch express his satisfaction to see so many women present at the launch and their commencement of this programme.
 
He said that owing to the high cost of food worldwide and the fact that the Government of Grenada is a caring government, it recognized the need to come up with a way to alleviate in some small way the burden faced by our people.
 
Delivering the feature address and to declare the programme open,  Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Forestry, Fisheries, Energy and Public Utilities Hon. Gregory Bowen, spoke about the overall purpose of the programme.  The purpose of the programme he said is to increase local food production through the reactivation of home gardening. The Minister spoke about the need to intensify local production of food under a Food security programmed in light of the soaring prices and increasing shortage of food occurring globally. Through the home garden programme families and householders would be encourage to use innovative ways to enhance their food status.
 
The programme is expected to increase home gardens throughout the country by at least 50%.
