The Grenada Hotel & Tourism Association fully supports the work carried out by local NGO Ocean Spirits as they strive toward the conservation of the Leatherback Turtle, education and community development.

Leatherback turtles have year round protection in Grenada which makes the taking of their eggs and indeed, all other sea turtle eggs, and the hunting and killing of adults illegal.  The threat to these wonderful creatures by the illegal poaching of their nest, beach development, sand mining on beaches used for nesting, and litter in the sea, continues to be of great concern.

Perpetrators must be made aware that their careless acts are an endangerment not only to the turtles, but to themselves and all Grenadians as our fragile tourism industry would be greatly affected by negative international publicity which in turn would impact the country’s economy by causing a downturn in the number of persons choosing Grenada as their holiday destination and ultimately a decrease in foreign earnings.

In order for the island’s tourism industry to continue to grow the general population must adopt the slogan ‘Tourism is Everybody’s Business’ and in doing so, assist Ocean Spirits with the good work they have been putting a great deal of time, money and effort into.
