China and Grenada sign Housing Contract PDF Print E-mail

ImageTuesday June 3, 2008 St George’s there is good news for the Housing sector in Grenada.

The Minister for Social Development and Housing the Honorable Yolande Bain Horsford and Mr. Zang Xiu representing the Chine’s Embassy on Tuesday signed the design contract for the two thousand houses donated by the Peoples Republic of China.

The contract provides specifications of the design for construction of houses as approved by technical officials from both China and Grenada.

The contract clears the way for the commencement of construction of houses in phase one, where five hundred and thirty Six (536) units will be constructed.

Construction in the first phase will take place at four sights, Lacalome in St David’s, Soubise St Andrew and Frequente and Mt Gay in St George.

ImageCurrently the Chine’s are completing the soil test after which construction will begin at Soubise and Mt Gay.

Speaking at the signing ceremony Minister Bain Horsford thanked the Chines for their donation and described China as a special friend to Grenada. She said “the relationship is continuing to blossom and bear fruits and its one that the Government and people of Grenada will cherish”.

Minister Horsford further stated that the housing units will serve to eradicate any housing problem that may still exists.

The houses were promised by the Chine’s Government in the after mat of Hurricane Ivan when approximately 90% of the housing stock in Grenada were either destroyed or damaged.
