The Town of St. George has suffered under the New National party administration but the situation will change with the delivery of better healthcare, cultural enhancement programmes and business development under an NDC government, says a senior party official.
Peter David, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, told a meeting on H.A. Blaize Street that a government of the NDC will give priority to providing "proper healthcare'' for senior citizens. "We have to provide the conditions where they spend their sunset years in comfort and happiness,'' said David, who is seeking re-election as Member of Parliament for the Town of St. George. "I, as your parliamentary representative, commit to ensuring that an environment is created where our elderly spend their sunset years comfortably and happily.'' David pledged NDC investment in education, the development of a new vendors' market and the restoration of the Carenage community, including the creation of a pedestrian area. "We, in the National Democratic Congress, say to you that we will build a better society. We will not discriminate. We will represent all,'' said David. Among the plans of the NDC, as outlined by David, were the building of resource centres for youth training and recreation, the rebuilding of the Tanteen Playing Field which was severely damaged by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, and the construction of state-of-the-art panhouses for Angel Harps and all other steelbands in Grenada. "Angel Harps is a proud product of this area,'' David said. "In fact, I myself drummed with Angel Harps for many years. And I believe that Angel Harps needs to be restored as an integral part of the community.'' David emphasized that his party is not promising to create "heaven and earth in two days.'' But what the NDC is saying, he added, is that "together we can do better.''
