No political campaign is without its humorous moments.  Grenada has had many since Prime Minister and leader of the New National Party, Dr. Keith Mitchell, announced a month ago that general elections will be held July 8.

Many guffawed when NNP St. John candidate Fitzroy Bedeau fumbled his party's slogan by urging voters, "Don't Let the Progress Congress.''  NNP St. Mark candidate Clarice Modest-Curwen later told a La Sagesse rally of the NNP that on July 8, voters were going to "replace the New National Party in office.''

Now there are reports of more than 20,000 T-shirts arriving at the St. George's Port late last week.  The discussion on the streets, in rumshops and in Grenadian homes was that the NNP had ordered the T-shirts. However, while the slogan, "Let the Progress Continue, was emblazoned on the jerseys, the colour was not the NNP's green.  It was the yellow of the National Democratic Congress.

NDC executive member Arley Gill, chairing a youth event of the National Democratic Congress in La Sagest on Saturday, said the NNP T-shirts were green when they left China in containers destined for Grenada.

"All you know when they open the containers on the Port, all them T-shirts yellow, yellow,'' Gill said.  "From the time they reach Grenada waters, they turn yellow.''

Gill, in lampooning the NNP, said NDC leader Tillman Thomas will negotiate with Dr. Mitchell to acquire the jerseys for the National Democratic Congress.

"Sisters and Brothers, we're asking the NNP to give us the T-shirts,'' said Gill.  "NNP bring yellow T-shirts for us.  Thank you, NNP.''
