More than fifty medical practitioners in Grenada will participate in a two day workshop from 9.00am on Tuesday, September 30th through Wednesday, October 1st 2008, at the Grenada Red Cross conference room in St. George’s. The workshop will focus on the introduction of the new computerized Perinatal Information Systems - (SIP).
The workshop which will be facilitated by officials from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and host country Grenada. Healthcare officials say the workshop is timely, as it seeks to bring more health benefits to expectant mothers and improve the level of care that will be offered by medical practitioners to both mother and child. An attempt, ten years ago, to institute the programme at the Obstetric Unit of the General Hospital’s failed as a result of the lack of computer skills among the health professionals and the complexity of the programme. However improvements and modification to the programme has made it more user friendly. Today, the Ministry of Health is desirous of re-educating all levels of staff in (Doctors and Nurses) within the community and on Paediatric and Obstetric Units in the use of (SIP) which will provide strategic information pertaining to health outcomes, behaviours and determinants. Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) in the Ministry of Health, Nester Edwards, says the workshop is important, as innovative interventions are being made in the area of healthcare across the globe that can and will bring long-term “benefits that can be realized”. She said countries like Grenada ought to take full advantage of the assistance being offered by institutions like PAHO, to improve our delivery of healthcare and as such “we should not get left behind.” The programme will assist in developing, managing, monitoring national goals and targets.
