In particular, the Reggae, Rhythm and Blues Concert went off in style as 16,000 people turned out to see some of the Caribbean’s top artists perform live on stage, including one of the biggest names in Jamaican Dancehall and Digicel Brand Ambassador, I-Octane.
The ‘positive vibes’ performer wowed crowds with his rendition of Nuh Love Inna Dem, My Life, Puff It, Badda Than Them, Nuh Ramp Wid Me, Nah Wash and said, “Performing here in New York for the Caribbean Diaspora has been a fantastic opportunity. The crowds are amazing and, thanks to Digicel, together, I feel like we are bringing a taste of the Caribbean to New York’s Diaspora communities.”
Sunday’s Digicel Caribbean Cup New York final also drew huge crowds as football fans turned out to see team Jamaica USA beat St. Kitts and Nevis USA (3-2 on penalties) to be named DCC New York Champions 2011.
The DCC New York final also coincided with the final of the Digicel Kick Start Clinics in which 150 aspiring young soccer players trained under the expert coaching of Jamaican-born, England and Liverpool soccer legend, John Barnes. The Digicel Kick Start Clinics are part of Digicel’s soccer grassroots programme, which, this year, includes the Diaspora community for the first time.
The best three players from the Clinics in New York will be chosen to travel to the elite Digicel Academy in Trinidad and Tobago, where they will spend a week developing their skills and technical ability, as well as learning valuable life skills such as personal awareness and self-esteem – all through positive reinforcement, fostering an appreciation of soccer's intrinsic values.
Digicel’s Sales Operations Manager for the Jamaican Diaspora, Nadine Johnson, said, “At Digicel, we are committed to keeping our Diaspora customers connected to their roots, and this Labor Day weekend did just that. Full of positive and ‘irie’ vibes, the Digicel-sponsored activities brought together thousands of people from the Diaspora to celebrate with a taste of home, and we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who came out to make it a very special weekend.”
Digicel currently offers a range of innovative products and services to Caribbean and Central American nationals living in the Diaspora, including online top up – where customers can log on to any Digicel website and top up or send minutes to loved ones back home; retail top up – where customers can go into any one of over 100,000 retail stores in the UK, Canada, the Caribbean and the USA and purchase Digicel top up or send Digicel minutes to friends and relatives in their home country; and Digicel calling cards – where customers calling friends and family in Haiti and Jamaica can call home at competitive rates using minutes stored on the calling card.
