PRIME MINISTER TILLMAN THOMAS IN THE KITCHEN AT RIVER SALLEE SARACA
The River Sallee Saracca began over one hundred years ago and is held on the Friday after Easter every year. The event has its origins in the agricultural traditions of the area and is a way to bring the community together to celebrate and give thanks for the successful harvesting of crops and produce.
This tradition of community spirit is still treasured by the people of River Sallee, who are keen to pass this on to future generations. On the morning of Saracca, food is distributed and cooked in several different homes, coordinated by a committee of various community–based groups and organisations, as well as representatives from neighbouring villages.
In keeping with the old traditions, the different dishes are prepared and arranged on large board trays, decorated with fresh flowers, a bottle of rum and a ten dollar bill. The trays are then carried to the central playing field to be laid out and judged. This year, heavy rain forced the food presentation and judging to be moved to the River Sallee Government School, but the food was still served out and enjoyed by everyone, followed by the traditional Nation Dance accompanied by drummers, which continued into the night.
The event was sponsored by the Grenada Cultural Foundation, Levera Resort Development, Bain’s & Sons, River Antoine Estate, Mr Malik Kaaba and Mr. Richard Simon.
